Colours

My original point of inspiration

I worked through some of the colour and composition exercises in Sandra Meech's book "Contemporary Quilts, Design, Surface and Stitch"

Pages from sketchbook

I focused in on a narrow portion from the postcard and cut it into a thin strip. Then I looked at the colours and amounts of colour in the strip and I painted the stripes on water colour card

The colours I will use:

Colours left in my palette

Copying the colours in the painted strip above I made a yarn wrapping. Wrapping yarns round a strip of card helps to see colours, proportions and also helps to focus on textures. I made a similar colour strip using torn magazine pages

Yarn wrap detail

This exercise was looking more at composition and arrangement of colours - I used more torn magazine strips and wove them into this pattern

Really interesting to follow your process, Carolyn. The colours are lovely and bright. I have launched myself straight into a project today when I know full well I should have followed your good example and gone through these steps first!

Hi Julie, I had to show the design process for college and filled a sketchbook with samples. I actually really enjoy the process because working on the samples I always think of new things to try as I go along. One thing inspires another ...

I have this book and have done this process before but I really should do it more often.
You have chosen a great card with fantastic colours to interpret.
